IT TAKES TWO
Objective:
Create a reflective artifact that synthesizes key themes from semester projects, serving as a roadmap for future research in communications design. This piece explores the intersections of criticism, storytelling, and critical evaluation, with a focus on the theme of community and its impact on communication.
Deliverables:
• Identify recurring themes as seen across the semester's projects.
• Write a concise, final reflection summarizing these themes in under 250 words.
• Design a book that integrates content from two of three semester projects (Media Analyzation, Pecha Kucha, Literature Reviews) to visually convey the synthesis of these insights.
INSPIRATION:
Inspired by the concept of "togetherness from separate parts," and the role of community in effective communication, my design reflects how individual elements of communication combine to create a cohesive message. To embody this theme, I used vellum layering, allowing each page to reveal its unique contribution to the larger message.
Design Process:
After completing the final reflection, I found that themes of community and cohesion emerged across my Literature Reviews and Pecha Kucha. Photo collages from the Literature Reviews were separated into layers for each page, enhancing the concept of a unified whole emerging from individual elements.
I printed the book on layers of vellum, which visually breaks down each page into fragments that align to form complete images and text layouts when viewed together.
Final Solution:
The result is a pair of booklets that emphasize community as central to communication. The vellum layers reveal overlapping text and images, adding depth and texture, while individual typographic layouts and photo fragments create a visual narrative. Each booklet functions as an individual piece that is completed within a unified, cohesive whole.
