ObjectivE:
Synthesize key findings from reviews to identify recurring questions and concepts, laying the groundwork for future research in communications design. This artifact should serve as a roadmap for exploring the intersections of criticism, storytelling, and critical evaluation within design discourse.
Deliverables:
Identify recurring themes across reviews, focusing on the role of criticism, storytelling, and critical evaluation of design works
Write a final reflection identifying recurring themes across the semester, maximum 250 words
Produce a book synthesizing and conveying these themes, utilizing two of the three semester projects (Media Analyzation, Pecha Kucha, Literature Reviews)
Process
After writing the final written reflection, I found a common thread of community and it's importance for good communication in both my Literature Reviews and my Pecha Kucha. I decided to create my book in a format that would emphasize this theme of togetherness from separate parts. The solution I settled on was printing on vellum.
The Literature Reviews provided several photo collages, each of which I broke apart into several layers, as shown above. Each layer serves as a different page, and only when all of the pages are aligned can one see the original piece and message.
Similarly for the text, I pulled from my Pecha Kucha script, three Literature Reviews, and final reflection. I chose quotes that reflected on community then created typographic layouts. Once I had the initial layouts, I duplicated each and then cut and edited to create individual layers.
Final Solution
The final result is a pair of booklets commenting on the importance of community for communication. The vellum not only allows viewers to see through the pages to what lies beneath but adds a richness and depth of texture. The combination of typographic layouts and pieces of photo collages make each book an individual piece while still being part of the whole.
